Sustainable Meals on Wheels

The London Borough of Islington invited the project team to assist with their Meals in the Home contract. Sustainability Objectives were developed for the contract.

Tendering Toolkit
More recently we developed the toolkit for tendering for sustainability.  Specifications for the objectives, which are included in the toolkit have been cleared by the legal team at Camden.

Notification Request
To evaluate the success of the toolkit it is essential to capture other examples of local authorities adopting the toolkit.  Please inform the project manager of your take up.

    Sustainability Objectives
  • Sustainable Food – organic, seasonal, fresh & nutritious
  • Waste reduction – reduce packaging & food waste, recycling packaging
  • Resource Use – water & energy use per portion
  • Supporting SME’s – accessibility to second tier suppliers
  • CO2 emissions – food miles, delivery related emissions

Working Group
Several London Boroughs have joined our Working Group and with the assistance of Sustain and the Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative (PSFPI) sustainability objectives were developed.

Supplier Engagement
In developing the toolkit the working group intially held a supplier engagement workshop to encourage dialogue between first and second tier suppliers; to review current practice on sustainability issues and to explain the purpose of sustainability objectives against council commitments. For more details of the event see the case study and the presentation from the workshop.
